Review: Turn Up the Heat

Turn Up the Heat
Turn Up the Heat by Randi Alexander

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mackenzie Jarvis has never slept with a woman. So why has she fallen madly in lust with Gina Volto, host of the reality cooking show Mackenzie is competing in? Mackenzie's wild desire to live out her fantasy, battles with her conservative Wyoming values. Then Gina pours on the seduction, Mackenzie runs--home to her ranch, her horses, and her busy career as the owner and chef of a restaurant. But Gina shows up at her ranch in a snowstorm, and Mackenzie allows herself one weekend of forbidden, kinky pleasure.

When Gina admits she wants more than just a few days, can Mackenzie ignore her upbringing and her plans for a traditional life with a husband and children? Or will she give in and turn up the heat?

I have to be honest, this is my very first F/F story. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I definitely got what I do expect from a Randi Alexander story. That is a story with characters who are real and I actually care about reading about them. I was involved in the story from the start and love how Ms. Alexander depicted a woman falling in love with a woman for the first time. This was no cheesy woman on woman sex story. This was a love story where the two main characters happen to both be women. They faced a unique set of problems and they overcame them. I loved the setting and the behind the scenes look at the restaurant business. I am glad that I had the chance to open my reading horizons. If you are looking for something new then I suggest this book.

Review: Pursuit of a Kiss by Lola Drake

Pursuit of a Kiss
Lola Drake
4 Stars

Ousted from Olympus until he can restore true love back to the world, Eros stumbles upon a match made in heaven – if they can survive hell first.

Juliet doesn’t have much in common with her namesake. Her career-centric life sorely lacks romance. Then one night everything changes when she witnesses a gang shooting and ends up getting shot herself.

FBI Agent Jake Parker has known Juliet for years, but only as the baby sister of his best friend. He still imagines her as the awkward teenager she used to be. When Jake must protect Juliet from the gang determined to eliminate the only witness against them, he discovers that he’s not the only one who’s changed in the last ten years.

Will Jake take the risk of having a real relationship? Will Juliet survive long enough for him to decide? The pursuit of a kiss has never been so dangerous, or so much fun.

This book is part of Evernight Publishing's Cupid's Conquests series.

This novella was a quick and satisfying read. The author held my interest from the first page to the last. There was so much romance and intrigue packed into this book, I felt a little breathless while I was reading it. I eagerly turned each page to find out what was happening next and before I knew it I was done. The conflict felt real, if a little tidily wrapped up. But hey, it's a novella so it is only so long.

You guys all know how I feel about novellas. I am greedy and I want all of my stories long. In this case though, I didn't feel cheated and to me that is the sign of a good novella. The author managed to give me the information I needed and still make it an interesting read in a short amount of pages.

This was a debut novella for author Lola Drake and she hit it out of the park. I look forward to seeing more from her in the future.
