Review: Lovely Vicious

Seventeen-year-old Isis Blake hasn’t fallen in love in three years, nine weeks, and five days, and after what happened last time, she intends to keep it that way. Since then she’s lost eighty-five pounds, gotten four streaks of purple in her hair, and moved to the Buttcrack-of-Nowhere Ohio to help her mom escape a bad relationship.

All the girls in her new school want one thing – Jack Hunter, the Ice Prince of East Summit High. Hot as an Armani ad, smart enough to get into Yale, and colder than the Arctic, Jack Hunter’s never gone out with anyone. Sure, people have seen him downtown with beautiful women, but he’s never given high school girls the time of day. Until Isis punches him in the face.

Jack’s met his match. Suddenly everything is a game.

The goal: Make the other beg for mercy.

The game board: East Summit High.

The reward: Something neither of them expected.

*This book contains language, some of which may be unsuitable for younger readers.*

*This is the first book in the LOVELY VICIOUS series.*

“I paid the fee, if that’s what you’re here about,” Madison starts. Jack looks to her, smile flashing on for a moment.

“Let me talk to her. Give me one second.”

“Okay,” Madison giggles. He grabs my elbow and pulls me in the other direction.

“Is that how you kissed me?” I ask, nearly tripping as he pulls me along. “Golly gee, it looks kind of mildly fucking embarrassing! No wonder up my appointments - ”

“Whoa, I think you overestimate me, shitlord. Last time I checked all I did was be in the wrong place at the right time. I saw you and had to - ”

“Stalk me.”

“ - delicately approach you. In a sideways manner. From behind. Without being seen at all. For ten minutes.”

“Why are you even out? I thought you were sick.”

“I was. See, it’s this thing called an immune system -”

He holds up his hand and rubs his eyes. “Okay, stop. Shut all systems down and just. Stop. Talking.”

“It’s annoying.”

“That’s never stopped me before!”

“Why did you follow me?”

“I was…curious?”

He looks down at the jar of frosting I clutch in my hands. “Are you eating that out of the can?”

“Are you the king of stupid questions?” I fire back. “Of course I am! Frosting is the ambrosia of the gods. God, if you’re into that religious thing. Are you religious? Somehow I get the feeling the only church you’d join is the church of self-worship. Your body is your temple. Work it, boy.”

“What are you saying?” He snarls.

“You’re blabbering!”

“At least I’m not whoring!”

"I'm working right now, okay? I’m getting paid. So you need to just piss off and go to whatever immature party you were going to in the first place.”

“How’d you know I’m going to a party?”

“The receipt for red plastic cups sticking out of your jacket. Your eyeliner. Girls don’t make eyeliner wings that big unless they plan on drinking.”

“Touché. You’re smarter than I gave you credit for.”

“And you’re far more annoying than I first suspected. If I’d known you’d stalk me like all the others, I never would’ve kissed you, even as payback.”

“Seriously, you kiss everyone like that though! It was nothing special.”

“Exactly. It was nothing special. So back off and leave me alone.”

My Review
4 Stars

I hardly know where to begin with this. I am still reeling from the ending. Umm, yeah, it's a cliffhanger and a good one. I really hate cliffhangers, but only because I am all about instant gratification as you all know. But this was awesome! Didn't see it coming. I am dying to know what's going to happen next. I mean, I REALLY want to know. You hear that, Ms. Wolf? I can't wait to get my hands on the next one. So, ya know, email me or something.I will happily review it, when it's ready *g*

Ok, onto the rest of the review. The characters are fun to read. Isis almost always has some form of verbal diarrhea going on. Its like she has no brain to mouth filter. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's cringe inducing, but it's always entertaining to read.I was also riveted at the lengths that Jack and Isis go to in their war against one another.

Crazy antics aside, these are some seriously damaged characters. Of course we find out most of what's in their past but it is doled out carefully, with excruciating slowness. I found myself reading faster and faster to figure out what the heck was going on with these kids. You won't believe it when you do. Nope, not getting any spoilers here! You need to go read the book. I think you won't be disappointed.

The only thing about the book that bothered me was the abrupt change in POV. We spend the first 60% or so in Isis' POV and then bam! Suddenly, Jack's POV is thrown in. It's not the male point of view I object to. I enjoy when we get both sides. But if you are going to do it, I think I like it better if it's established. I think it should be from the get go, or not at all. It was sort of jarring to have to adjust to a new view point. Of course that's just my own personal preference and didn't change my opinion about the book. Still loved it.

have I mentioned I can't wait for the next book!?

Genre: Contemporary Interracial Romance
Length: Novel (77,500 words)

When Lyle Cummings is left standing at the altar on his wedding day, all of his carefully composed plans for the future come crashing down around him. The pragmatic doctor is left questioning his well-ordered existence and wondering if there isn't more to life than the achievements of wealth and career.

When he meets Katrina Giordano, a fiery lounge singer with more passion in her pinky finger than he possesses in his entire body, his mundane life is turned upside down. In Katrina, he finds everything his life has been lacking. With her, he will learn that what he thought was love really wasn't at all.

But will Katrina's dark past threaten the happiness that Lyle has found after so much heartache? With her life, and now his, hanging in the balance, Lyle will find himself tested when it comes to how far he will go for love.

Chapter One

Lyle Cummings glanced up from the surface of the gleaming bar top and into the eyes of the petite woman moving around behind it. She was holding a frosted beer mug in one hand and controlling the Miller Lite tap with the other. Sympathy flashed in her stare, causing Lyle to jerk his own gaze away as if stung. He didn’t want her sympathy. All he wanted was peace, and . . .
“Single malt scotch on the rocks with a twist.”
He knew that his request had come out more like a raspy, barked command but Lyle didn’t care. Today of all days, he had the right to act like a jackass.
An understanding nod followed, and the bartender quickly moved to fill his order. She sat the scotch in front of him and accepted his debit card.
“Would you like me to start a tab?” she asked as she swiped his card.
Hell yes. Today was also a day for getting drunk.
He wrapped his fingers around the perspiring glass and inspected the bruised knuckles of his free hand. Mottled splotches of blue, purple, and green marred his sun-bronzed skin, and swelling edged the bruise with a ring of deep red. Lyle’s fingers curled into his palm as he downed the scotch in a few long gulps, the fire racing through his gut elevating the adrenaline rush he felt at the thought of smashing Jack Thompson’s face in. A few drops of blood stained the cuff of his white dress shirt and the sight of it sent primal satisfaction through Lyle’s gut. It was the only pleasure to be salvaged from the disaster that should have been the happiest day of his life. Well that and . . .
“Another,” he rasped, sliding the empty glass back toward the bartender.
She arched an eyebrow at him while reaching for a clean glass. “Who’s the unlucky guy?” she asked, nodding toward his bruised knuckles.
Lyle grasped his newly filled glass. “Nobody.”
She laughed. “Looks like Nobody took quite a beating.”
That’s not all he took, Lyle thought. The reminder of the earlier events caused his rage to flash back to boiling point; Jack Thompson may have been on the business end of his fist, but ultimately the other man had won. Even now, Jack was riding off into the sunset with his Holly and probably felt not an ounce of guilt over what he’d done. And why should he? Holly was everything a man could want in a woman. Jack had lost her once to divorce. It was unlikely that he was going to be stupid enough to repeat the mistake after winning her back again.
A frown pulled at the corners of Lyle’s mouth as he stared down into the contents of his glass. The bartender reached across the wooden top and clasped his injured hand. Lyle flinched and snatched it away, glaring at her with narrowed eyes.
“I was just going to offer you some ice,” she said gently. Lyle felt like an ass when he saw the bundle of paper towels clenched in her small fist. He tried to offer her a smile as she pressed the ice-filled towels against his knuckles, but it turned into a grimace as the ice came in contact with his flaming skin.
“You should stick around,” she said warmly after he’d taken over with the ice. “We have live music on Saturdays.”
She placed another filled glass in front of him and Lyle took it, nodding his thanks and looking away, freeing the bartender to wait on her other customers. He took his time with this drink, the tentacles of the first two already reaching out through his body with warm intent. He hadn’t noticed much about his surroundings since arriving, but he took stock of them now as he drank.
The lighting was dim, which was good because if someone in the room knew him, Lyle didn’t want to have to deal with that. The pitying eyes of the bartender were one thing; the probing stares of people who were expecting to see him with a ring on his finger and a bride on his arm would be enough to make him want to go somewhere and splatter his brains across the wall. The bar was long, wrapping in a serpentine pattern around half of the room. At least three other bartenders worked the gathered patrons, who sipped beer and munched on peanuts while waiting for the music to start. Conversation filled the room in a dull buzz.
The other half of the room was filled with round, cloth-covered tables and wooden chairs. Waitresses bustled in and out of the crowd in short skirts and white tops, pens in their hair and comfortable shoes on their feet. Lyle’s stomach rolled and clenched with nausea at the smell of nachos and greasy hamburgers. He took another sip of scotch and sighed in relief at the feel of fire burning the nausea away. Just then, he didn’t care if he ever had another bite of food again in his life. If he could just crawl into the bottom of the liquor bottle and curl up in the fetal position, he could die somewhat happy . . . or, at least, numb.
Jutting out from the back wall was a stage hosting a microphone stand and a couple of speakers. A red velvet curtain separated the stage from whatever was going on backstage. Lyle tipped his glass back and stood, deciding that listening to some bartender’s sister’s band sing the blues was the last thing he wanted right now. Another drink, preferably in a quieter location, was just what he needed.
“Closing out the tab?” the bartender asked as he stood and dropped a few dollars in the tip glass. He nodded.
“Yes, thank you,” he said, holding up the makeshift ice pack. “Have a nice—”
Lyle’s sentence was cut off by a man’s voice. A burly bouncer in a tight black T-shirt was on stage, announcing the act for the night. He could barely hear him because of the catcalls and whistles coming from the audience. Every man in the room seemed to lean forward in anticipation as the curtains parted to reveal the figure of a woman holding a guitar. She walked forward with a bright smile, her skin bathed in the glow of the spotlight as she took a seat on the stool.
Lyle felt frozen in place as she strummed on her guitar and opened her mouth to sing. Her voice was like velvet, a purr that wrapped itself around him tightly and squeezed, flooding his insides with warmth and . . . something else—he wasn’t quite sure what. He felt himself moving, and somewhere in the back of his mind realized that he’d backed toward the stool he’d left seconds ago and was sitting down again.

My Review:
4 Stars
I was first introduced to Ms. Marion when I read The Secret Life of Avery O'Dea. I thoroughly enjoyed that book and jumped at the chance to be part of this blog tour. Ms. Marion's latest does not disappoint. We are first introduced to the hero, Lyle in a novella called, My Ex-Wife's Wedding, which by the way is a free read on Bottom Drawer's website. Just click the title to be taken to the page. I really enjoyed the novella and was eager to see what happens with poor Lyle who is left jilted at the altar.

I really enjoyed this book! The emotion was written so exquisitely I could feel it as I was reading. The first time Lyle saw Katrina on stage, it blew me away as much as it blew him away. I was giggling right along with the bartender. Of course there's more to Katrina than Lyle knows, which makes this story even more interesting. What will happen when Lyle finds out about Katrina's past? I was dying to know if her family troubles were going to bring more problems into the story.

And obviously Lyle has plenty of baggage to bring to the table. their lives certainly complicate the relationship. There is a fair share of some suspense to keep you interested too.  I'm not gonna tell you what happens though. My attention was hooked the whole time and I just devoured this story. Plenty of emotion to keep me sucked in. If you get your chance to get your hands on this book, I highly suggest you take it.

The e-book is on sale at $4.99 for the duration of the tour, normally $5.99

There will be a tour giveaway with the following prizes:

2nd Prize: e-Book copy of The Groom

Witness Pursuit: Character Interview & Review

One life.

Twenty-one-year-old New Zealander Lydia Sands witnessed the hit-and-run of a powerful man’s son. Her bodyguard is shot when the killer returns to dispose of her and The Program puts her in hiding. A year later, the case remains unsolved and her handler needs to get her further from the killer’s reach. Lydia detests the thought of being close enough to endanger the man who nearly died protecting her, even if it’s aboard a super-yacht traveling the South Pacific.

Tyler Whitehall’s shooting stole weeks from his memory. Physically recovered, he oversees security for Whitehall Shipping. While on a family holiday, Tyler is suspicious of the woman accompanying them without notice or security clearance, as his nephew’s caregiver. Stronger than suspicion is his incomprehensible attraction to her, and his instinct to protect her.

Once sensitive information is leaked, Lydia undergoes re-identification to evade a killer and protect the man who’d die to save her. Her bodyguard has just begun his pursuit, and she may have underestimated his abilities.

My Review:
4 Stars

I really enjoyed this book. As I am sure you all know, romantic suspense is my favorite genre to read. I love the combination of a good suspenseful mystery and romance to boot. This book had that. It kept my interest and kept me on my toes. There was more than one part where I was all, I think I know what's gonna happen, and then I was surprised. I LOVE it when a  book can do that. Also, have I mentioned that I have been addicted to Aussie/New Zealand books lately? I love the descriptions, love the slang, not sure why, but I am hooked. I don't want to give to many details away because I hate being a spoil sport and you are going to want to read this book yourself. Plus, just take a look at that cover: Hello hot guy!

Just know this is a great book. I was on the edge of my seat. All the deceit, half truths, lies and missing memories. *squee* It was wonderful. I was drawn in from the very beginning. Heck even before page one, the description had my interest. I'll be honest with you, I am mostly a one woman show here at Love Books! I get so many review requests that I have begun to be very picky. If the books description doesn't get my interest then I pass on doing a review. I was hooked by this description. I wanted to know more about Lydia and Tyler and what the heck was going on. How she felt about him not remembering her, what happens if the killer finds her, and how it all would end. So thanks Ms. Wadsworth for a book that had me engrossed until the very end.

Now below, enjoy this interview between Joanne Wadsworth and the heroine Lydia. Then stick around for the excerpt. Have a great day everyone.

Hi, and thank you so much for having me on your blog today.

WITNESS PURSUIT is book one in my Bodyguards series, a heart-pounding line in which each story will bring you a bodyguard and the woman he protects. I’m sitting here with my heroine, Lydia Sands, from WITNESS PURSUIT.

Joanne: Hey, Lydia. Thanks so much for taking the time to come and sit with me today.

Lydia: I’ll always come and talk to you, Joanne. You sent Tyler to me right when I needed him the most. Although-- *frowns while tapping her fingers on her knees* --we do need to have words about why he had to get shot. It was agonising to witness both that and his memory loss. You’re cruel.

Joanne: Um, well sorry. All cruelty aside, Tyler’s memory loss was actually necessary. He certainly came back even stronger, as well as more intent on discovering exactly who you were.

Lydia: Yeah, but right when I couldn’t have him knowing. The hardest thing I’ve ever done was keeping the secrets I had to from him.

Joanne: Tyler’s a bodyguard. You can’t stop a bodyguard from doing what they do best.

Lydia: I certainly gave it a good shot. I didn’t want to be his client. I wanted whatever time we had left before I went through re-identification to be solely with him.

Joanne: Tell me more about Tyler. What draws you to him?

Lydia: He’s incredibly strong. He’s smart, caring, sexy as hell. The one issue I have though, is he cares more for my wellbeing than his own. I’ve really got to train that out of him.

Joanne: *grins* Yeah, good luck with that.

Lydia: Are you saying it’s not going to happen?

Joanne: I can almost guarantee it. How about a fun question? A deserted beach or a fabulous resort? Which would you choose?

Lydia: A deserted beach. I love what Tyler can do when we’re all alone. Wow. His ability to pursue really goes into high gear at those times, and a deserted beach means I can wear a bikini, or not. *chuckling*

Joanne: You tease. Still, thanks so much for joining me, Lydia. I really enjoyed writing your story, and I can’t wait to share it with readers.

Here’s an excerpt to tempt you:

Down the super-yacht’s hallway, Lydia walked toward Tyler then slowed as her gaze dropped to her case in his hands. “What am I going to do with you?” She shook her head, tut-tutting under her breath.

“You’d already packed.” He slid a hand around her waist and led her to his room. “I’m simply moving your belongings from one room to another, and I’ll show you exactly what you can do with me.” He closed his bedroom door and flicked the lock.

She set her hands on her hips. “Ah, is that to keep me in, or others out?”

“Both.” He dumped her bag beside his drawers and unzipped it. “What did Saria say?”

“We had a long talk, and she said yes. She’ll let me go through re-identification first, and follow as soon as she sits her finals. They’re in just a few weeks.” She stepped up to him. “Ben will place my application tomorrow, although he said it might take a few days for all the arrangements to be made. He told me to hold tight and wait.”

Gritting his teeth, he opened his bottom drawer and piled her clothing in. “He approved of it all, this fast?” He’d have words with Ben. She should be with him.

“Of course. It was his idea to start with.” She gripped his arm. “I never said I’d move in with you, and now you’re unpacking for me?”

“Lee.” He dragged her into his arms. “I want you here, no matter the length of time.” He lifted her and laid her on his bed. Stealthily, he moved in to lie over top.

“I know you do. Oh, do you feel that? The ship’s moving.” Cranking her head to the side, she peered out the windows where the lights of the resort flickered.

“We’re sailing to the far side of the island. There’s a quiet cove, and it’ll be the safest place for you.”

“I hadn’t forgotten.” She slid her hand down his chest and played her fingers over the ridges of his abs under his shirt. “As long as we’re all safe, I can deal with it, for a short while.”

He lowered his forehead to hers. “Since you insist on going through re-identification, I need to be able to track you once you go under. I’m giving you fair warning now.”

“Ah, excuse me. That sounds highly illegal. The whole point of re-identification is so no one can find me.”

“Yes, but I’m not a threat to you, and only you and I will know what I’ve done.”

“And what will that be? Ex-act-ly?”

“By track, I mean I’ll place under your skin a very small tagged chip. It’s like a GPS system, but it’ll have a direct signal to me.”

“And…” Her gaze narrowed.

He rubbed his cheek against hers. “I’ll be able to check in with you, no matter where you are in the world. We can hardly have an exclusive relationship without there being some form of relationship.”

“Sooo, you’re asking me to go against the rules of re-identification?” She gave him a look that said she wasn’t going to agree.

“You’re very stubborn, but I happen to be twice as bad. Whether you agree or not, I’m going ahead with it.”

No one would take her from him. Not ever again.

He’d make certain of it.
