Now enjoy my interview with Aleatha Romig. Today she is giving away autographed, print copies of Consequences and Truth! (I have added my own comments in Blue)
Thank you for having me here today!
How did you come up with the idea for these books?
I had the idea for the opening scene of Consequences. I imagined a woman in Claire’s situation. I didn’t know anything else. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to know; who was she? How did she get there? Why was she there? I decided to start writing and let my imagination come up with the answers.
I like the way your imagination works *g*
Did you write Anthony's character hoping for such a strong reaction to him?
I did and I didn’t. As I got into my story, I found myself having a soft spot for him. It surprised me. Just like most readers, my initial reaction to him was fear and angst. Yet, as I continued, he began to grow on me. I like “bad boys” and he fits that description. Of course it helps that in my mind he is incredibly sexy and can be tender and romantic. However, the first people to read my manuscript HATED him. When I first learned there were people who even in Consequences fall for him I was pleased.
I know Amy has very strong feeling towards his character.
Did you have specific inspiration in mind for Anthony and Claire? Are they based on real people?
Upon my mother’s first read of the manuscript she called me all concerned and asked if the story was autobiographical. If you knew my husband you would know how absurd that question really was! No. Tony and Claire are not based on real people. I would say Tony is a combination of characters. I was watching the Tudors while writing. I think there is a little King Henry VIII in Tony.
I have to agree with you there. I became addicted to the Tudors after one episode just because of King Henry VIII
Claire, apparently her physical characteristics unconsciously mimic a friend of mine. One day my friend handed me her driver’s license and said, “look at this”. I was like, “sure”? She had just read the scene where Claire is reading her driver’s license, the stats are almost identical! She asked if I had secretly gotten into her purse and looked at her license. I started laughing, no... Claire wasn’t based on that friend or anyone else. She’s meant to be more of an everyday common woman.
If it were made into a movie, who do you see playing some of your favorite characters from the books?
First, wouldn't that be amazing! I’d love to see Consequences a movie and of course be involved in the casting. Initially in my mind’s eye I have seen Joe Manganiello as Tony. Some of my readers have posted pictures of Jon Hamm. I’m seeing that too. Claire, I’m not sure. My original was Natalie Portman. But on a Goodreads thread they have cast other woman who would work too.
Umm, yeah, Joe is HAWT! I am not a huge Jon Hamm fan myself but I could see him as the character.
How many books will be in this series?
Three. Convicted will be the end of the series.
Do you have any books planned for the future, other than this series?
I have ideas for another series; however, I’m too centered on Convicted right now to start writing it.
What are some inspirations when it comes to story ideas?
Anything and everything. It can be something that happens to me or someone I know. It can be something I hear on the news, read in a book or see on TV or a movie. I watch a lot of Criminal Minds and shows like that. It is fun to get an idea and let it grow.
Have you ever heard a song (or seen a movie) and just had an entire story pop into your head?
No, but that would be wonderful! My stories grow as I write. I know the beginning and end of each book. I just don’t know how I’m going to get there. I let the story write itself.
Do you have specific scheduled writing times?
No, and that’s a problem. I wrote Consequences in the evening. Each night after dinner I’d write until midnight or one. Truth was different. I’d go to bed early, wake up about two and write until five or five-thirty. Then I’d take a nap and get up and go to work. With Convicted I have the added bonus of suddenly being “known”. I love interacting with my readers and great bloggers like you. However, this has seriously cut into my writing time. I MUST become more disciplined. The good part about having a readership is that I’ve been able to cut back on my work as a dental hygienist. I am hoping this new found time will help with my writing schedule.
Are there times when you think a story should go one way and your "characters" change your mind for you?
Oh, Yes! And I love that. I love being so wrapped up in the story that I can’t type fast enough. I love when something happens and I am completely shocked. That happened in Truth. I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t read. But something happens to change Claire’s perspective, something that surprises her. It surprised to me too. I had not planned on that change of course. Yet once it happened, I had to go with it!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Wow! That was a long time ago, when I had those questions. Originally, I wanted to be an oceanographer. I love swimming and I thought diving down under the ocean sounded cool. However, I grew up in Indiana. We don’t have many oceans. So, I decided to be an attorney, like my father. He talked me out of that? My mother was a nurse. I didn't want to do that, but I did love science, so I learned about dental hygiene. I truly have never regretted that career choice. It has been very good to me! I even taught at Indiana University School of Dentistry for twelve years. But through all of that I always wanted to write. It wasn't until recently that I had the opportunity and time. Now, I want to be an author when I grow up!
I wanted to be a Marine Biologist, but alas, not much call for that in Wisconsin.
Which author is an automatic buy?
J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series! (I’m not as into the Fallen Angel series – not sure why) Nevertheless, I LOVE the big bad vampires of the brotherhood! Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series! I recently read Notorious Nineteen. The characters and predictable predicaments are almost like a family reunion –
fun, light hearted and familiar.
I am addicted to Stephanie Plum!
What do you eat/drink while writing?
While writing I don’t eat. Drink... depends on the time of day or night. I need my morning coffee! Iced tea is my daytime drink of choice. As the sun sets I bring out some wine. But after losing one laptop, I've learned to go stemless!
Umm, yeah, I had that same problem with a chocolate martini once. Those darn martini glasses are so tippy. The sad thing is, it happened before I even had my first sip. I learned my lesson: Martini's and laptops don't mix!
What are you reading right now?
I just finished Kelli Maine’s Taken and am about to start Tiffany Reisz’s Siren.
I have read Taken and Siren is on my TBR.
What is your guilty pleasure?
That would probably be the wine!
I also love me some wine *g*
What TV show are you LOVING right now?
Well, I don’t watch a lot... it’s that time issue. So, I DVR and watch what I like when I can. Many of my normal series have been good this year. But to say LOVE... I’m anticipating the third season of Game of Thrones! I absolutely believe it is the best show with the best actors and storylines I have EVER watched. I love the multiple storylines and diverse characters. I’ve been told George Martin’s books are equally as amazing. They are on my TBR list. I just don’t think I’ll ever have enough hours in a day!
Ok, speed round *g*...
Jeremy Renner or Jason Statham? Is it bad, I had to look them up? I’ve never seen their movies. Based solely on first impression - Jeremy
You need to watch you some Jason and Jeremy movies STAT! Good choice with Jeremy *g*
High Heels or Flats? High heels (not too high)
Beach or Woods? beach!!!
Iron Man or Thor? Thor, not because I’ve seen the movie, I haven’t. I picked Thor because of Chris Hemsworth!
Gone With the Wind or Titanic? Gone With the Wind! My all-time favorite!!!! Book and Movie!
Ursula, thank you so much for having me with you and helping to celebrate your birthday bash! I hope you have a great birthday!
