Guest Review: Progeny

Hey y'all. It's that time. Time to welcome my guest reviewer Amy for her thoughts on another book. Please enjoy her review and show her some comment love!

“No fate other than the one I choose.” The timeless creed, and tattoo, bore by the Rousseau’s— a vampire clan with the purest bloodline of any vampire family. Out of this clandestine group came one who was different, yet the same: Ascher - a half-bloodling— half- human, half vampire.

Ascher questions the purpose for his existence and which world he truly belongs to: the human world or the vampire world. Two months from sealing to Ursula— a prearranged union to a woman he abhors — he’s at his wit’s end. He knows if he calls off the sealing, the Romanian clan will strike with deadly force, but he cannot see eternity with a cold empty shell of a woman like Ursula.

Just when he thought life was complicated enough, he meets Shauna— a beautiful, bi-racial human wiccan — and immediately develops an unshakable attraction to her. She makes him feel alive and vital despite his origins and Ascher makes a decision that turns his immortal world upside down.

It’s your friendly guest reviewer Amy and I’m at it once again! I’ve been spending some time reading and I am very excited to be sharing a new book with you. This one is a paranormal romance. This is a genre that I love. I have to admit I fell in love with the paranormal the first time I saw Buffy the Vampire Slayer on TV and I have been hooked ever since. I’m sure you’re dying to know so I’ll tell you, I am team Spike

Today’s book is The Progeny by Ashlynne Laynne.  Ascher (Ash) Rousseau is a half vampire half human who falls in love with Shawnette (Shauna) McCutchin half human half witch , who is just learning her true heritage. Their relationship is rocky right from the start. Ash can’t control his hunger around Shauna, but just can’t seem to stay away. For most of the book the relationship is push and pull. Not only do their own issues pull them apart, but the evil vampire Ursula is out for blood when Ash calls off the engagement because he finds his true soul mate, Shauna. Will their love stand the test of time or will secrets destroy it forever? You will have to read the book for yourself to find out because I am not giving to much away!

This book has elements of the Twilight series in it. The relationship between Ash and Shauna is Twilighty! At first he can’t resist the smell of her blood then falls in love with her and can’t be away from her. Ash struggles with this because he sees himself as an abomination and feels he will ruin Shauna’s life and a chance of having a family. Shauna’s blood is so irresistible to Ash that he is afraid to make love to her because he won’t be able to control himself. Then there is the issue of whether to change Shauna, of course, she’s all for it and he wants her to be absolutely certain because if he does it being a half blood they aren’t sure what she will become. I have to give a mention to the big cast of secondary characters in the book. Ash's family and friends played important roles as did Shauna’s sister Katy.

Whew! This book was jam packed with vampire angst. I had a little trouble with the book being what I call “Jumpy” it’s when you read a passage and the have to jump back a few pages to make sure you didn’t miss something. Because of this it was hard for me to connect with the characters. The book left off just getting to the good stuff so I will be checking out the second book in the series and will be back to let you know what happened in book 2. This series has a lot of potential and I will give it 3.5 stars. I encourage everybody to pick it up and see what you think.
